FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS- UROC EVENTS
United Riders of Cumberland (UROC) is a non-profit organization based in Cumberland, BC (Unceeded Komoks Traditional Territory) responsible for the management and maintenance of the Cumberland trail network, and presenting mountain bike and trail events.
UROC generally hosts five race events (Island Cup XC, Dodge City Enduro, Gromduro, 12 Hours of Cumberland, and Coaltown Throwdown) as well as participate in third-party events such as Stokefest and BC Bike Race.
Each community-based event offers categories for riders of all abilities, giving participants a fun and competitive race experience on Cumberland’s world-class mountain biking trails.
How do I register for the races?
Registration for each event is available online through the UROC website where there’s a REGISTER link on each event card on the events page. Each event will have its own registration card that clicks to the specific event page with details about timings, locations, categories, distances, and fees.
What categories are available for the races?
Each race event offers a variety of categories to accommodate riders of different levels, ages, and genders. Most events are solo registration, with the exception of 12 Hours of Cumberland where riders can register solo and in teams of two or four.
For more information on the categories please see the REGISTER link for each event.
Are there gender categories in the races?
Yes, UROC offers gender-based categories in all competitive divisions in our race events. We have separate categories for men, women, non-binary, and open participants, ensuring all riders can compete in a category that aligns with their identity. We are committed to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone. If you have any questions or need assistance with gender categories, please contact us at manager@unitedridersofcumberland.com
What are the race distances and routes?
Each event in the race season has different distances and routes, ranging from 7 / 10 km to 50 km, depending on the event and registration category. The courses take riders through Cumberland’s famous trail network, offering a mix of technical, steep and fast flowy singletrack. For specific route details please visit the REGISTER link for each event.
Is there an entry fee?
Yes, each event has an entry fee, which can vary depending on the race category and the specific event. For detailed pricing information for each race, please visit the Registration Page.
Do I need a mountain bike in good condition?
Yes, participants should have a mountain bike in good working condition. We recommend a full-suspension or hardtail bike with knobby tires suitable for off-road trails. If you’re unsure whether your bike is race-ready, it’s best to have it checked by a local bike shop before any event.
Will there be food and drinks available at the events?
Yes- but please read carefully!
Enduro events will provide some snack and water stations located in the course route, but participants are responsible for packing everything they need for event day- bring your own hydration and snacks! This is for your own safety- for example, if there are delays in bringing water refills out to course you want to make sure you are self sufficient and have enough water with you to finish the race safely.
Each race will have a BBQ meal with hot-dog/hamburger (vegan & gluten free options available), snacks and a cold drink available post race to registered participants and volunteers.
The BBQ & food stand is running/open between set times on race day, make sure you get your share of food before the BBQ & food stand shuts down
Are spectators allowed to watch the races?
Yes, spectators are welcome at all events in the race series and we encourage you to cheer on riders! The number one mission of the UROC race series is to promote a positive community atmosphere around mountain biking, so the more support racers get out on course or at headquarters the better.
Please do not walk or bike on trails that are part of the race course for everyone’s safety, and stay safely off the trail while spectating a race event. Course Marshals will be out in the network directing traffic at trail intersections.
Remember to always check trail signs when walking in the Cumberland trial network. If a sign says “Gravity Trail” you are at high risk of encountering a mountain biker travelling downhill at high speed if you choose to walk that trail. The safest route is to stick to trails labelled “Nature Trail” or “Multi-Use Trail”.
Are there prizes for winners?
Yes, each event in the race season will have prizes for the top finishers in each category, including swag from UROC and our sponsors. Prize details for each event will be posted on the event-specific pages. All registered racers and volunteers will often be entered into a prize draw for each event. If there is a small number of entries in one category we will discuss with you if you would like to be brought up onto the podiums.
What should I bring to the races?
Make sure you’re prepared for race day by bringing:
- A mountain bike in good working condition
- A helmet (required for all riders)
- Race attire, gloves, and protection gear
- Hydration pack or water bottle and lots of water
- Nutrition & snacks (i.e. energy bars, granola bars, gels, etc.)
- Spare tube and bike repair kit
- Sunscreen and personal first-aid kit
Is parking available at the events?
Yes, parking is available at Village Park in Cumberland near the BMX track in the large gravel lot. Alternative parking locations are along the park on Dunsmuir Ave., or along the other side of the park on 6th St.
The park gets very busy with multiple user groups and recreational traffic, so please consider biking to the event if possible.
How can I volunteer for the races?
Volunteers are crucial to the success of each event! If you’d like to volunteer, please go to our events page and click the VOLUNTEER button next to the event you’re interested in. You’ll fill out a short information form and our volunteer coordinator will contact you shortly.
Volunteers receive race-day perks such as snacks, lunch, BBQ, and entry for draw prizes. All volunteers will be invited to the UROC volunteer appreciation party in the fall.
What happens if the weather is bad?
We monitor weather conditions leading up to each event. In the case of severe weather, such as heavy rain or wind & thunderstorms, races may be delayed, rerouted, or even rescheduled. We’ll provide updates via email, our website and social media channels, so please stay tuned for any changes.
Can I transfer my registration or cancel my entry?
All events have a no registration transfers and cancellations policy. Please review any Cancellation & Transfer Policy on each event’s page for any specific information.
I’m a sponsor. How can I get involved?
